![]() (I had second thoughts about writing this review only because I want this theatre experience not to change in response to the greater audiences it deserves. PETERSBURG freeFall will start off 2023 with a new play by Mat Smart, winner of the Inge Festivals Otis Guernsey New Voices in the American Theatre Award. Petersburg’s Freefall Theatre has announced its return to traditional programming with the 2021-22 mainstage season. While Davis’ Holmes and McGee’s Watson are more or less straightforward, the others seem to have exploded out of a Warner Brothers cartoon. Petersburg-a fifteen minute drive from downtown-this little theatre stands alone in a tree-lined half-block, with its own ample parking lot and user-friendly staff and policies. Following a year of offering safer ways to experience live theater, St. The freeFall performers are Kelly Pekar, Robert Teasdale and James Putnam, and they are never still. The setting of Freefall Theatre couldn't be better. Another unusual offering, Lorca's "The House of Bernarda Alba" (the musical version) was compelling and effective as it paired the play with flamenco music and dance. This is a review not only of this show, however, but of arguably the best little professional theatre in all of the Tampa Bay area! Their production of "Cabaret" went into multiple "encore" performances, thanks to audiences clamoring for more. And their solos and harmonies in a score based in blue-grass accompanied by a live instrumental group of five, captured the pathos of the story without sapping its beauty and strength. But the liveliness and passion of the teenaged sons of the miners, their humor, their idealism, and their heroism, completely captivated the audience throughout the two-hour show. We saw a little-known play from 2010-"The Burnt Place Boys." It's the story of the consequences on a family of a West Virginia mining disaster, when the mining company is ready to reopen a mine that is the gravesite (the "burnt place") of many of the fathers of the small community. "Intimate musical theatre" might seem like an oxymoron. ![]() Last Sunday (when Freefall had a Father's Day special-Dad's got in free) our chairs were in the top row, but we still were never more than 30 feet away from the actors, and (because of the smart "pitch" of the risers) we had great sight-lines for the action performed on a rectangular stage viewed "in the round." Freefall's artistic director is exceptionally talented, so the plays (often musicals), other directors, and casts are always well-chosen, the conception is imaginative and engaging, and the pacing is impeccable. The theatre itself is simple, small, and intimate-something unusual and precious these days. There’s a reference to the paid endorsements Beard received for products he didn’t always stand behind and a brief quip about his penchant for cooking in the nude, much to the annoyance of his neighbors.I've been to several Freefall Theatre productions over the past couple of years, and have never had anything but an exceptional and satisfying theatre experience. Viewers learn how opera, not the culinary arts, was Beard’s first real passion - and the disappointment he suffered when a career in the dramatic arts (he also gave theater and Hollywood a whirl) didn’t pan out. Potatoes, wrapped in wet newspaper and tucked under hot coals right on the beach.īut the play also references the harsher aspects of Beard’s life: his personal struggles as a gay man during a time when homosexuality was still very taboo the inevitable heartbreak that comes from unrequited love. freeFall Theatre discounts - what to see at St. Petersburg’s Michael Raabe and Eric Davis and first announced for freeFall Theatre’s 2019-20 season, is finally going to see the light of day. It looks like the musical OZ, written by St. In one scene, McGee recalls digging for razor clams off the Oregon coast. Ebony Repertory Theatre's 'Blues in the Night' comes to freeFall in 2023. Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective has one of the most accessible gameplay systems in the industry. Yet it was these very reasons of hesitation that eventually coerced me into picking it up, making me wonder if such an experimental idea might work. It was unlike any game I had encountered before a game that boasted legacy- and escape room-like elements way before the genres came into their own, that pitted you and your friends against the wits of a man we so often were encouraged to root for, and did so in a world that was potentially as open as the worlds of large-scale video games like Skyrim or Fallout. Combining the regular conceits of the traditional Sherlock Holmes adventure with a change of scenery and a different type of mystery provides a new and exciting addition to the Sherlock Holmes canon that has to be read. ![]() Overall, The Counterfeit Detective is a masterstroke of Holmes literature. Similarly, Douglas’ own creations stand out Lestrade’s New York counterpart, Bullock responds you would expect a New York policeman of the late 19 th century would to Holmes’ rather eccentric manner of detection. Douglas equally provides a rich variety of characters throughout the book – his version of Inspector Lestrade is wonderfully in keeping with Doyle’s own image of the character. Rather than focussing solely on the mystery of the fake Holmes or attempting to present an intimate portrait of Holmes’ character Douglas balances both giving ample amount of space to the plot and the characterisation of his two leads. These two contrasting threads, combined with Douglas’s excellent characterisation of Holmes and Watson add weight to the novel. Part of the mystic of Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories was Holmes’ assured knowledge of London’s criminal underbelly.īy placing Holmes in a city similar but not the same to London, author Stuart Douglas plays a masterful game of putting the world’s greatest detective in a fish out of water situation whilst facing a mirror image of himself that is attempting to profit off his reputation. The novel combines Holmes at his best stalking the streets of London whilst also introducing an exciting alteration to the Holmes formula Holmes out of water in New York. Whilst Elementary may have shifted Holmes from London to New York, it fails to capture the sheer brilliance of the world’s greatest detective in New York in the same way The Counterfeit Detective does. Set against the bustling hub of late Victorian New York, The Counterfeit Detective is one of Titan’s best Sherlock Holmes novels to date. I sold the MR2 and bought an NSX and continue to use the Cteck tender this winter with no issues. After that I kept the car on that tender and had no more issues. I couldn't beleive it but it did, it took 3 weeks to completely allow the battery to get to 100% but it made it. I was told the Cteck will bring it back to life by my local parts store. Director Tartakovsky, too, is no longer behind the proverbial camera, though he retains a screenplay and an executive producer credit. Kevin James, who voiced Dracula’s good pal, the klutzy Frankenstein, has also left, replaced by Brad Abrell. Maybe because Sandler himself isn’t even there to begin with: He’s been replaced by impressionist comedian Brian Hull, who voiced the character in an earlier Hotel Transylvania short. It feels less like an animated romp among Sandler and his buddies and more like the paycheck gig it probably always was. The fourth entry in the series, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (out now on Amazon Prime Video, so your kids don’t even need you to take them anymore) mostly sticks to that established formula, though it’s hard not to feel like the dutifulness that always loomed over the previous films has now fully taken over the enterprise. You could watch them with your kids and not feel your soul corroding into dust. The Hotel Transylvania movies made sure nobody would ever mistake them for an Oscar-bound Pixar classic, but they weren’t entirely without heart, either. Over the years, the ongoing efforts of Sandler’s overprotective and doting Dracula to safeguard his family in various ways - whether by keeping his daughter Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) far from the human world or by making sure his grandkids got in touch with their monster ways - began to feel like an animated slapstick version of what might well have been the comedian’s own midlife angst. Over the years, these movies have scored by never promising too much: Mix some obvious (but not necessarily unfunny) jokes, a by-the-numbers story, Adam Sandler doing the world’s worst Dracula accent (which, thanks to the alchemy of Sandler’s commitment to never committing, somehow becomes the world’s best Dracula accent), stitch it all together with some visual inventiveness courtesy of director and cult animator Genndy Tartakovsky, and voilà, you’ve got a hit.īut there was sweetness there as well.
